Biography

Antjin (Annie) de Marest was baptized 23 Dec 1733 in Schraalenburg, Bergen County, New Jersey; ^[1] the daughter of Samuel De Maree and Lea De Maree. ^[2] She married Hendrick Banta 24 Jan 1751 in New York. ^{[3] [4]} Antjin with Hendrick and children established a home in Somerset County, New Jersey. With many other Dutch families they relocated to Conewago in York (Adams) County, Pennsylvania about 1764. One-hundred years later the Battle of Gettysburg would be fought on that same land. They rafted down the Ohio River to Louisville Kentucky in 1780, where multiple times Shawnee Indians attempted to drive them away; they killed her son Jake, her sister Maria Westervelt’s family and other relatives. Eventually, they established a Dutch colony in what was to become Henry County, Kentucky. Antjin and Hendrick raised their own twenty-one children (seven from Hendrick’s first wife Rachel Brouwer), three of whom died in infancy; and, after one of their sons died, they also took in his nine. She left all her property to her son John in her 24 May 1805 will. ^[5]
